Understanding Different Water Purification Technologies: RO, UV, and UF
Shopping for a water purifier often means drowning in alphabet soup: RO, UV, UF, TDS, MTDS. Let’s break down the three primary filtration technologies.
1. RO (Reverse Osmosis)
RO uses a semi-permeable membrane with incredibly tiny pores (0.0001 microns). Water is pushed through under high pressure, leaving dissolved impurities like heavy metals, salts, and pesticides behind. Best For: Water with high TDS (above 300 ppm) like borewell or tanker water. Pros: Highly effective at removing dissolved solids and dangerous chemicals. Cons: Wastes a significant amount of water as reject water, and requires electricity.
2. UV (Ultraviolet)
UV purification uses a high-intensity ultraviolet lamp. When water passes through, the UV light damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and cysts, rendering them harmless and unable to reproduce. Best For: Water with low TDS (municipal water) that might have microbial contamination. Pros: Kills 99.9% of microorganisms without altering water taste or wasting any water. Cons: Does not remove dissolved impurities (TDS), mud, or chemicals. Requires electricity.
3. UF (Ultrafiltration)
UF uses a hollow fiber membrane (larger pores than RO, around 0.01 microns). It acts as a physical barrier against bacteria, cysts, and suspended solids like mud or rust. Best For: Low TDS water with physical impurities, or areas with frequent power cuts. Pros: Removes physical impurities and bacteria. Does not require electricity. Wastes no water. Cons: Cannot remove dissolved salts (TDS) or heavy metals.
Most modern purifiers use a combination (like RO+UV+UF) to provide comprehensive protection against all types of contamination!
