Hard Water vs Soft Water: What’s the Difference?
You’ve probably heard the terms “hard water” and “soft water,” but what do they actually mean? The difference lies in the mineral content, specifically calcium and magnesium.
What is Hard Water?
Hard water contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. As water percolates through deposits of limestone, chalk, or gypsum, it picks up these minerals.
Signs of Hard Water:
- White, chalky scale buildup on faucets, showerheads, and kettles.
- Soap doesn’t lather well; you need more soap to get bubbles.
- Clothes feel stiff and look dull after washing.
- Dry skin and dull, lifeless hair after bathing.
What is Soft Water?
Soft water contains low concentrations of these minerals. It occurs naturally in some regions, or it can be achieved by using a water softener, which replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions.
Signs of Soft Water:
- Rich lather from very little soap or shampoo.
- No scale buildup on appliances.
- Clothes are softer and cleaner.
- Skin feels slippery or “too clean” after washing.
Drinking Hard vs Soft Water
From a health perspective, drinking hard water is generally safe and can actually contribute to your daily dietary needs for calcium and magnesium. However, if the hardness is extremely high, it can taste bad and might require an RO purifier to make it palatable. Soft water is great for bathing and washing, but naturally soft water is better for drinking than artificially softened water, which can have high sodium levels.
