Why TDS is Important For Your Health

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) refers to the concentration of dissolved substances in water. These can include minerals, salts, metals, cations, or anions. Understanding your water’s TDS is the first step in ensuring your family is drinking safe and healthy water.

1. It Determines Water Taste

TDS has a massive impact on how your water tastes. High levels of certain dissolved solids can make your water taste bitter, salty, or metallic. Low TDS water, conversely, can taste flat.

2. It indicates Potential Contamination

While high TDS isn’t necessarily a health hazard on its own (it could just be harmless minerals like calcium), it’s a strong indicator that harmful contaminants might also be present. Elevated TDS levels often prompt further testing for toxins like lead or arsenic.

3. It Affects Your Appliances

High TDS often correlates with high water hardness. This can lead to scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and coffee makers, severely reducing their lifespan and efficiency.

4. It Dictates Which Purifier You Need

The single most important reason to know your TDS is that it dictates what type of water purifier you need. If your TDS is below 300, a simple UV/UF purifier is enough. If it’s above 300, an RO system is necessary to reduce the solid content.
